Carotid Disease

Carotid Disease

Carotid disease is a condition in which the carotid arteries—the two major blood vessels located on either side of the neck that supply oxygen-rich blood to the brain—become narrowed or blocked due to the buildup of fatty deposits (atherosclerosis). This narrowing reduces blood flow to the brain and significantly increases the risk of a transient ischemic attack (TIA), commonly known as a mini-stroke, and stroke.

In its early stages, carotid artery disease often causes no symptoms, making regular screening important for individuals with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking history, or a family history of cardiovascular disease. Early diagnosis and timely treatment can help prevent life-threatening complications and protect brain function.

At our Vascular Surgery Center, we provide comprehensive evaluation and advanced treatment for carotid artery disease using state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, minimally invasive endovascular procedures, and surgical expertise. Our goal is to reduce the risk of stroke and ensure the best possible long-term vascular health.

Causes of Carotid Disease

Carotid artery disease is primarily caused by the gradual buildup of plaque inside the carotid arteries. Common risk factors include:

  • Atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in the arteries)
  • High blood pressure (Hypertension)
  • High cholesterol levels
  • Diabetes mellitus
  • Smoking and tobacco use
  • Increasing age
  • Obesity
  • Physical inactivity
  • Family history of stroke or cardiovascular disease
  • Previous heart disease or peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
  • Unhealthy diet rich in saturated fats

Managing these risk factors through lifestyle changes and appropriate medical care can significantly reduce the risk of stroke.
