These arteries are responsible for delivering oxygen-rich blood to the small and large intestines. When blood flow is restricted, the intestines do not receive enough oxygen and nutrients, leading to severe abdominal pain and, if left untreated, permanent intestinal damage.

Mesenteric ischemia may be acute, where blood flow is suddenly blocked and requires emergency treatment, or chronic, where the arteries gradually narrow over time due to atherosclerosis. Patients with chronic mesenteric ischemia often experience abdominal pain after eating, fear of eating because of pain, unintended weight loss, nausea, and digestive problems. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential to restore blood flow, prevent bowel damage, and improve overall health.
